Watch BBC America on Roku
To watch BBC programs, TV viewers in the U.S. had to wait a long time – may be years before they got hold of one. Though it’s still not as easy as watching American-made series — at least legally, the Internet has made it fairly easy to catch your favorite British television shows on BBC America. Activate Roku and enjoy streaming British TV shows.
Here’s what an Anglophile can do:
With a few tips on making the most of your British television experience follow our guide for finding many of your favorite BBC series online.
The BBC iPlayer
Featuring nearly all of their current programming, the BBC offers its own streaming service, the iPlayer. But if you live outside the U.K., you can’t use it.
There have been constant rumors doing the rounds for several years that eventually the iPlayer will be available for subscription within the U.S. too. Oddly, it hasn’t happened yet, but many Americans would be ready to invest their money into the BBC for this particular service.
Because there is roundabout (legal) ways to do so, you can still watch iPlayer:
All you have to do is bypass geo-blocking with the help of a DNS server that is used by the BBC to prevent their online content from being watched by the viewers in the U.S.
There is one such DNS service costing less than $4 a month that we have used successfully called Uno Telly. The free trial service is 100% guaranteed for up to seven days.
You can watch iPlayer from nearly any device, once you’ve registered and set up your DNS service –
- Smart Television
Though they arrive later than their live dates in the U.K., many BBC series are eventually featured on Netflix. You can catch up on recent series such as the excellent Black Mirror, Peaky Blinders, Call The Midwife, Broadchurch and Doctor Who, if you’re patient and don’t mind the wait. Activate Roku and subscribe to Netflix for enjoying BBC streaming.
On Hulu Plus
Though the selection isn’t quite up to par with Netflix, Hulu Plus does offer a good variety of older British TV shows. Nevertheless, on Hulu you can stream older episodes such as:
- Top Gear
- Peep Show
- Doctor Who
- Coupling and The Thick of It (featuring Peter Capaldi, the 12th Doctor)
Hulu is the way to go if you’re looking for older BBC series. Hulu can be easily subscribed once you activated your Roku.
Falling far behind Netflix and Hulu Plus is Amazon Prime’s unlimited streaming. In fact, we found only one offering, when we searched for BBC series on the Prime service and that is The Hour. Doctor Who is definitely not something that you can look forward to here.
However, Amazon Prime does have one thing that the other services don’t –
BBC America’s Orphan Black – the first two seasons
Amazon, iTunes, Vudu and Google Play
The only other legal way to get your BBC content that is if you don’t want to wait months and you don’t want to pony up the cash for a geo-blocking bypass service is buying individual episodes or full seasons of shows.
For that you can check out:
- Google Play
It costs more than subscribing to UnoTelly or using the iPlayer. 24 hours after they air in the U.S. on BBC America, you can watch many BBC series online, if you’ve got the money. The only problem is that you will not be able to view any obscure BBC shows that they show in the U.K. Usually months after their being aired, you still have to wait for months after they’ve aired on PBS for shows such as Sherlock Until.
